As students head back-to-school, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is reaching out to colleges, universities, primary and secondary schools and counties throughout the state with our Back-to-School Toolkit. We want to let instructors, administrators, parents, coaches and students know that by using Florida’s 511 Traveler Information System, they can stay informed on traffic conditions, plan alternate routes, and arrive to class safely and on time.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is sharing the information in this toolkit to remind drivers how the Florida 511 Traveler Information System can help them find the best and safest route to and from their destinations. Florida 511 is a service provided by FDOT that helps drivers arrive safely and with fewer delays. The user-friendly and customizable system provides real-time traffic information and lets drivers know what conditions they may face.

As students and teachers across Florida prepare to head back-to-school, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) reminds parents, students and employees to stay safe and avoid traffic by using its 511 Traveler Information System.

Before leaving, drivers should check the interactive road map on FL511.com for real-time traffic information and incident alerts in English or Spanish. They can also view roadway cameras showing nearby current driving conditions on their route. The Florida 511 mobile app, available on the Apple App Store or Google Play, features an interactive map showing traffic speeds and incidents on roads around the user’s location. The best feature of the app is Drive Mode, allowing motorists to use the app in a hands-free manner.

Drivers can register on the website for alerts and routes. When using the mobile app, drivers can put in an origin or destination to get a route to their destinations. Route-specific text and email alerts can include travel speeds, travel time estimates and information about congestion, construction and incidents. Parents, teachers and students can sign up for route-specific email, text and phone alerts on FL511.com. Alerts can be customized by choosing the time of day, day of week, and type or severity of incidents.

FDOT partners — the Central Florida Expressway Authority and Miami Dade Expressway Authority — have also deployed similar technology along their expressways. Traffic Management Centers (TMCs) collect information about roadway conditions throughout Florida. The data comes from sensors in and alongside the road, traffic surveillance cameras, and reports from Road Rangers, Florida Highway Patrol, local law enforcement and Waze.

Florida 511 provides route-specific information, and you will be able to access the information on demand, whenever you need it. Additionally, with My Florida 511 free text and e-mail alerts, you can receive a text message or e-mail alert when there is an incident on your personal routes.

Users of the Florida 511 Traveler Information System now have access to more benefits. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) added new features and improved upon existing ones to deliver even more real-time traffic and travel information.

The state’s official service continues to provide incident, congestion and construction information on Florida’s interstates and toll roads, and other major metropolitan roadways.

Features that can help you avoid traffic and safely reach your destination:

  • Driving directions, with point-to-point travel times and one or more routes via the website (Not available on Twitter)
  • Notification of crashes, congestion, lane closures and construction on Florida’s interstates, toll roads and major metropolitan roadways. Data is supplied by FDOT, Road Rangers, Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and Waze.
  • Severe weather alerts and forecasts, supplied by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) (Not available on Twitter)
  • My Cameras feature on FL511.com allows users to create a list of FDOT traffic cameras for a personalized live look at conditions along their route.
