Hurricane Preparedness Toolkit
To the Editor:
Hurricane season begins in June! Florida has experienced destructive hurricanes in the past two years. All residents should be prepared for the possibility of a hurricane or tropical storm this season, as with any season.
Floridians should prepare in advance for a hurricane. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is encouraging residents to include the Florida 511 Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) and its FL511 Mobile App in these plans. FL511 will provide valuable information to residents who both evacuate and return. The system and its app also can provide useful travel information during the days and weeks following a storm too, as the roads can be difficult to travel.
The Florida 511 (FL511) Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) is the state’s official source for real-time traffic and travel information. It includes the recently updated FL511 Mobile App. The FDOT is sharing this toolkit to encourage drivers to familiarize themselves with the system and app early in this hurricane season, so if needed they can access the wealth of information it will provide for motor travel before and after a storm. Of course, it is available year-round as well.
The system features a website in English and Spanish, the mobile app, text alerts, Twitter messages, and additional components. It provides information on congestion, construction, closures and other incidents that can affect travel on roadways throughout Florida.
This toolkit includes suggested article content, social media posts, public service announcements, and much more. Please feel free to share the material. FDOT wants to let everyone know that by using the FL511 Mobile App, website and other system components, they can stay informed on traffic conditions, plan alternate routes, increase driving safety and reduce travel time to and from their destinations.
Thank you for sharing these materials with your readers and viewers.
